"The
blues are supposed to put thoughts in the minds of people but
any time you get involved
with something that's really good for the
people, you can't get much
publicity on it because everybody is
banking more on trying to
get financial rewards on a thing than they
are on the wisdom of it.
The blues was made for wisdom but they'd
rather play the record they know that some kid is going to dance
to and buy
whether the song has wisdom or not.
This wisdom of the blues can
be used all through life and that's why
most blues songs are written as a statement of wisdom.
I'd say that
from 95% up to 99% of the
world believes that it don't make sense you
can't make peace.
It couldn't make sense you
can't make peace if you want to make
peace. You can make anything else you want on earth -the
best plane, the biggest ships, everything to fight with - but
suppose we
spend just half the time and
amount of money making peace that we
have spent making war? There wouldn't be a mouth on earth
that wouldn't be fed and nobody would have to suffer.
Out of all the things we did
and made on earth, regardless of how
we use them, it don't make
sense unless we have peace enough that
we can enjoy the world. God
made man the greatest of all the animals
but you
ain't
satisfied with that. You think you're smarter and you have
to get to killing each other. For what? It's all vanity,
anyway.
If you learned anything from
this book, you learned the facts of life
and the wisdom and knowledge
of the blues are these facts of life. I
feel that if the proper
songs get to the various people of the world, it
helps their mind to
concentrate on what's going on in the world and
this will give you a better
communication. That's the real meaning and
the real good of the blues, a better education and
understanding among all people.
The blues being the true
facts of life, we know it has been a fact of
life that the people in the world have always made
whatever they wanted. In making the many things of the world,
we've made everything
but peace. If you accept the wisdom of the blues, we can
definitely have peace."

BLUES RESEARCH NOTICEBOARD
NEW:
Slave To The Blues
- Coffles and the Auction Block
This article is part of a far larger
work ('Slave To The Blues') which seeks to focus on the secular roots of the
Blues back in slavery times in the USA.
Slave To The Blues is a long term collaborative project
between Max Haymes, Rex Haymes, Robin Andrews, Dai Thomas and
Alan White, where we
intend to highlight the non-religious music of the African American before 1865;
and at the end of the Civil War, paying particular attention to the ‘corn
shucking’ songs.
Coming in 2012:
Slavery and the Underground Railroad
- focus on Cincinnati, Ohio. |

Quote for earlyblues.com from Gary Fletcher, The Blues Band:
"Perhaps more than the musicians themselves I think it’s the guys who
chronicle the blues, past and present, who keep the blues alive. Without the
efforts of those who create resources such as earlyblues.com there would be
little or no cohesion between the various elements that go to make up today’s
blues scene"

"Early Blues is what making music is all about. A site that shows such a
love for the blues, the dedication shown by the constant updates, the essays and
historical research, lets us performers know that there are people out there who
really “get it”. Thank you, Alan!!

Quote for earlyblues.com from Harry Skinner (The Producers):
"Blues
music is part of the musician’s journey. It isn’t a historical artefact,
it is a word that describes both a simple form of music making and a
state of feeling that is as real now as it ever was, who-ever you are."
