Here is the latest
UK
and European Blues Festivals Guide 2019,
including blues related workshops, exhibitions and lectures.
Some festivals
are shown as "2019
- TBA" (awaiting details from the organisers). At least you can see roughly when
they will take place (most festivals are at the same time of year within
a week or so). Whilst I have taken every care to ensure details are
correct, please confirm dates with festival organisers - I have included contact
phone numbers, email addresses and website addresses. Please let me know
of any other UK or European blues festivals, workshops, exhibitions and lectures not listed here.
I regularly
update this list as I receive more details from festival organisers,
so
please check back often.
Thanks, Alan White.

The
UKBlues Federation is disappointed to have to
announce that the 2019 FORM UKBlues Awards will
not now take place. The reasons for this are
two-fold.
Over
a period of more than two months, we have been
seeking to finalise a hire contract with Preston
Guild Hall (PGH). After a number of redrafts,
the final document supplied by PGH still
contained a number of errors but, more
significantly, sought to impose upon the UKBlues
Federation and its Board members liabilities
that went far wider than common law and against
which we were not reasonably able to obtain
insurance protection. Having sought a legal
review which broadly confirmed our concerns, we
had no option but to cancel the proposed hire of
PGH for the Awards event on Saturday 27th
April 2019.
We
have worked hard to try to source a suitable
alternative venue which is both available and
feasible but these efforts have proved
unsuccessful .
In
order to identify the five finalists in the
various Award categories, we issued an
invitation to a panel numbering more than 750
people drawn from across the blues spectrum in
the UK to submit their nominations in 12 of the
20 award categories. The response to this
invitation has, frankly, been pitiful and of
such a disappointingly low level that we are not
in a position to put forward credible finalists
in these categories.
By
the closing date of the nomination period –
23.59 on the 14th January 2019 – less than 13%
of those invited had submitted nominations!
In
the regional categories, response rates ranged
from a single nomination to a maximum just under
13%, whilst categories such as Under the Radar,
Innovation and Lifetime Contribution were
similarly abysmally supported with single figure
numbers of nominations.
By
contrast, the Club/Venue category, the only one
open to the blues public at large, attracted
over 200 nominations for some 24 different
venues!
The
UKBF is deeply saddened by having to take this
action which we have only done after
considerable discussion and thought, a
considerable amount of work trying to find ways
to avoid doing so and with very heavy hearts. We
set out to create an Awards which had integrity
and were open and honest and we believe that our
action in cancelling this year’s Awards reflects
those values.
It is
difficult to put in words what message this
sends out about the blues scene in the UK. Of
course it means that the blues in the UK will
not have a credible awards for 2019, a year in
which we had hoped to build on the great success
of the inaugural awards and the support that we
thought had been engendered thereby.
Perhaps more significantly, it means that direct
and indirect sponsorship to a value in excess of
£16,000 raised through a great deal of hard work
by members of the Federation’s Board and the
generosity of the sponsors has been lost.
Whilst some of this money would have been used
to cover the costs of the Awards event, a large
proportion would have been used to provide much
needed financial support to the Federation’s
other activities including providing funding to
support the UK’s representative at the
International and European Blues Challenges and
various other initiatives including those
supporting and encouraging young and emerging
artists.
In
this respect we would like to thank most
sincerely all those who agreed to provide
sponsorship for the Awards:
FORM
Fit Out, Blues in Britain, the Lancashire Blues
Archive, Digital Blues, Blues in the South, The
Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival, Blues
Matters!, John Cee Stannard, the New Crawdaddy
Blues Club. EarlyBlues.com, Raven & Blues,
Colourblind Blues Show, Bluefunk Club, Poynton,
Lesley & Terry Marshall, The Meeting Room,
Elland, Jason Elliott & Paddy Maguire, Big House
Blues Bar, Darwen, Red Pepper Promotions,
Edinburgh Blues Club, Mid Wales R&B Club, Blues
at Woodlands and Upton Blues Festival.
The
support and generosity of these individuals and
organisations is greatly appreciated.
Looking forward, we plan to have a UKBlues
Awards in place for 2020 but with a
significantly different nomination process which
we hope will be supported to a far greater
extent than has been the case in 2019.

Friday

20th Big Wheel
Blues Festival 2018
Isle of Man
This is truly a year to celebrate the Big Wheel
Blues Festival as it will be the 20th
consecutive annual blues event: quite an
achievement we think. We are returning to the
Villa Marina over Friday 13th
and Saturday 14th
of July, hoping for some warmer weather. There
will be two ticketed concerts in the Promenade
Suite, doors open from 7.30pm, each night
featuring three excellent acts covering, as
always, a wide range of styles.
In addition on the Saturday afternoon there will
be a free outdoor stage in the Villa Marina
gardens, showcasing some of the cream of local
talent. If by any chance the weather is unkind
the stage will transfer indoors to the Colonnade
Suite.
Do come along and support the festival and help
us mark this anniversary.
Huge thanks are in order to sponsor James
Osborne Financial Services and Isle of Man Arts
Council.
Friday night opens with local band Loose Crew, a
5 piece good time band playing swing jump and
boogie from the 1920s onwards, right up to more
modern soulful blues classics. Next we have a
very welcome return for acoustic roots and
Americana masters Rob Heron and the Teapad
Orchestra, great crowd pleasers. Headlining the
night will be the Laurence Jones band, a real
must-see for lovers of stellar guitar playing,
Laurence being one of the very few top British
exponents.
Saturday night opens with New Orleans style
piano maestro Dale Storr, arguably the foremost
British artist of his genre, followed by the
Elles Bailey Band, rootsy blues country and
soulful rock crossover. Summed up by BBC 6Music
simply as 'the most incredible voice'. Bringing
the festival to a climax will be the Marcus
Malone Band, Marcus being hailed as Detroit's
finest rock/blues export, a supreme vocal
stylist. |

Latest Update
Little Theatre Stage at the Great
British Rhythm & Blues Festival:
Announced
Squeeze up #ColneBlues2019 bands, the
festival have announced their 2019 Little
Theatre line ups.
The Little Theatre is a 75 capacity
venue situated in the heart of Colne. It's
an intimate venue, full of character and
charm, with a full height stage and
comfortable, cinema style seating. A hugely
popular venue at the festival, this stage
forms part of the event's ticketed event
schedule.
The stage is curated by British blues-rock
guitarist and singer songwriter Jack J
Hutchinson, who says…
“It is a real honour to curate the Little
Theatre stage at the Great British Rhythm &
Blues Festival. I grew up just down the road
in Burnley, and it always feels like coming
home when I play or simply attend the
festival. There are a number of acts on the
Little Theatre bill who, whilst tipping
their hats to the past, offer something
refreshing and contemporary. Others present
a more familiar take on the blues, and are
no less vibrant. What they all share is a
commitment to new, original material.”
The artists featured on the stage are:
______________________________________________
As well as the array of talent that
headline the main stages, there are
also blues club 'picks' from around
the UK (from Scotland, England,
Ireland and Wales), a
blues-funk-groove-soul upbeat
'dance' day on Saturday 25th August
(at the Muni), talent from as far
away as Australia, Canada, mainland
Europe and the USA, a pick from BBC
Radio Lancashire's Bluenotes show
and some incredible homegrown new
and emerging talent.
Paddy Maguire, the festival creative
director explains further "I am
incredibly excited to help announce
the 30th anniversary year festival
line up - with plenty of diversity
within the blues music genre,
consisting of celebrated blues music
legends... and the promising legends
of the future. As an internationally
recognised festival, it is our duty
and responsibility to nurture
emerging artists and the UKs weekly
hosted blues clubs, as well
welcoming the founding fathers of
the blues genre".
plus many other incredibly talented
artists, including Dana
Ali Band, Blues
Boy Kings, Tom
C Walker, James
Sayer Band, James
& Black (USA), Russ
Tippins Electric Band, Greg
Coulson, The
Troy Redfern Band (Mid
Wales Blues Club pick), Delta
Fuse (The
Elner Delta Blues Club, NI pick), Andy
Gunn (Edinburgh
Blues Club pick), Rainbreakers (Tuesday
Night Blues Club pick)... and many
more.
Further 2019 line ups announcements will
follow in due course - next
to come will be the Mini Muni stage, the
BBC Radio Lancashire Bluenotes 'pick', the
Little Theatre stage,
special events, then
the myriad of ‘Roadhouse’ venues line
ups.
There will be a chance to apply to play
the 2019 festival via Jessica Foxley
Stages. Applications will be online
soon.
Current line ups can be viewed here: https://www.bluesfestival.co.uk/lineups/
More on the festival:
The Great British Rhythm and Blues
Festival will occur
in Colne, Lancashire, over the bank
holiday weekend of 23rd – 25th August
2019. This is the events’ 30th year
anniversary, and the third year in which
Colne Town Council have organised and
managed the event.
The festival takes place in numerous
town centre venues (from 750 to 50
capacity), Colne & Nelson Rugby Club
(which also doubles-up as the festival
campsite), plus many more restaurants
and bars. This beautiful town is an
ideal location for an event of this
kind, with one long ‘main’ street
(closed to traffic) which hosts
on-street entertainment, busking,
incredible food stalls, bars and more.
Each music venue is within easy reach of
the main street, making this event not
only one
of Europe’s
best contemporary blues festivals,
but also one-of-a-kind and much-loved
festival for people of the local area.
An estimated 15,000 – 20,000 people
attended both
the 2017 & 2018’s festivals; with the
event receiving a HUGE amount of love
(just some of the comments are below).
Tickets for the 2019 festival go on sale
at
10am
on Friday 7th December via the festival
ticket page. Camping
tickets will follow soon afterwards.
There are also many ‘Roadhouse’ venues
dotted around the town hosting events
and live music.
These venues are free
to enjoy.

Bowl

classic blues covers. Matt Paull on double bass and Ben
Coley on drums complete the trio.
Blues themed food will be available, including for one

Brewery near Salisbury.
